MCAS Tustin Hangars

• Built: 1942 during World War II

• Construction: Made of wood

• Size: Each hangar could hold up to six blimps

• Purpose (WWII):

  • Patrolled the Pacific Coast

  • Supported Japanese submarine detection

  • Supported aircraft operations

• After World War II:

  • Became Marine Corps Air Station Tustin (MCAS Tustin)

  • Hangars were repurposed to house helicopters

  • Supported Marine training and operations

• Base Closure: 1999

• After Closure:

  • Became popular filming locations

  • Featured in Pearl Harbor, The X-Files, Austin Powers, and Star Trek

• Recent History:

  • November 7, 2023: North Hangar was destroyed by fire

  • South Hangar remains standing

  • Environmental cleanup is underway while officials consider its future
